Percentage vs. Hourly Pay: What’s the Difference?

Hint: Percentage Pay Means More Time at Home and More Money in the Bank

When you think of truck driving, you probably think of hours and hours on the open road.

The longer you’re on the road, the more you’ll get paid. The longer you’re on the road, the more you’ll get paid. We will explain about percentage vs. hourly pay here.

Still, that means a lot of time away from your home and family. For some truckers, this might not be a problem, but having to stay on the road longer to get paid can get exhausting.

So, what if there was a different way to get paid with your CDL?

A way that doesn’t measure the hours you’ve driven, but the quality and efficiency of your work.

Fortunately, there is!

It’s called percentage pay, and it can help you spend a lot more time at home with your family. Plus, you can make the same or even more cash than you’d make driving hourly.

If that sounds like a pretty good deal, keep reading! We’ll explain the differences between percentage vs. hourly pay, and how percentage vs. hourly pay can help you put more money in the bank.

Hourly Pay

The best part of hourly pay is:

If the wheels are turning, you’re getting paid.

That’s a big advantage, especially if you’re stuck in traffic for hours on end.

But hourly pay has its fair share of drawbacks too. Your employer might not pay overtime for longer hauls, and they could dispute how many hours you actually worked.

Plus, you’ll usually be required to drive 14 hours on and 10 hours off by law. So, if you’re hauling ahead of schedule chances are you’ll lose some money.

The trouble is, you have to make every hour count.

It’s easy to become fatigued quickly, especially if you’re driving as many miles as possible within your hourly limit.

Oftentimes, hourly truck drivers end up overworking themselves to reach a salary that they deem acceptable to support their families.

And when you arrive at your destination, you could run into a “driver unload facility.” In this situation, the client might be trying to take advantage of your hourly wage…

In other words, the client expects you to unload all the items on your trailer by yourself. Sure, you’re still getting paid at the end of the day. But you’re a trucker, not a forklift driver!

Percentage Pay

Like we mentioned earlier, the advantage of percentage pay is that you’re getting paid for the quality, safety, and efficiency of your driving rather than how many hours you drive.

With percentage pay, drivers earn a percentage of the amount that each load costs.

Plus, during busy holiday seasons you can make a lot more than you would on a fixed hourly rate.

So, let’s say a client needs some goods hauled 1,200 miles and they’re willing to pay $3,000 for the load.

If you’re getting paid by the hour: at $25 an hour, if you finish the haul in about 18 hours, you’ll probably make around $450.

If you’re getting paid by percentage: at 27% of the load, you’ll be getting around $810 of the $3,000 the client paid!
